Five days after the Bougainville Referendum Commission (BRC) tweeted about a possible delay to the referendum and two weeks after the media first reported on the possible delay, the BRC have still not issued a formal statement on the matter.
The last update on the BRC website is dated 10 July 2019 and the BRC has made no formal comment over the past two weeks about the possibility of a referendum delay despite numerous requests for clarification.
It is less than one month until the 16 August 2019 deadline for the “Issue of Writs”, the final legal step in preparation for the October referendum.
The Bougainville Referendum Commission have three months until the referendum start date of 12 October 2019 – what problems can the BRC possibly be experiencing that can’t be resolved in this timeframe?
The people of Bougainville and Bougainvillians all around the world have been preparing for the October referendum and the World awaits this historic occasion.
Many Bougainvillians are naturally upset at the possibility of another delay and this is viewed by many as a further attempt to derail the referendum.
(Bougainville Times has asked for updates from the Bougainville Referendum Commission and we have requested interviews with each of the Commissioners. The BRC and the Commissioners have failed to answer any of our requests)
