ABG Welcomes National Government’s Resumption of Bougainville Road Projects

The Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) has expressed support for the National Government’s announcement regarding the resumption of road maintenance and construction in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville. These road upgrades will focus on three sections of the Kokopau to Kangu highway on mainland Bougainville.

RAIBRO has been contracted for the first section in the Selau area, while DEKENAI will undertake the stretch from Tavatava to Awi in the Koromira Constituency. COVEC will manage the section from Loubai to Tabago in the Konnou Constituency. Additionally, the completion of the Buka ring road in North Bougainville is part of this project package.

These major road projects are part of the National Government’s Connect PNG program, with funding already allocated for the work to resume. Prime Minister James Marape, speaking in Arawa last week, called on the contractors to return to work. He stated, “We have brought K9 million each that the Department of Works has given for the three contractors that are here – for Buka ring road and for the road from Kokopau all the way to Buin.”

Prime Minister Marape also mentioned that the National Minister for Works will be in Bougainville this week to meet with the ABG Minister for Technical Services to further discuss these projects.
