China’s Chang’e-6 returns to Earth with Rare Lunar Rocks

Chang’e-6 on Tuesdays became the world’s first spacecraft to bring back samples from the far side of the moon a.k.a the dark side of the moon as it cannot be seen from Earth. The US and Soviet missons and China’s own chang’e 5 had brought samples from the near side.

The far side is known to have mountains and impact craters contrasting the relatively flat topography of the near side.

The samples “are expected to answer one of the most fundamental scientific questions in lunar science research: what geologic activity is responsible for the differences between the two sides?” said Zongyu Yue, a geologist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in a statement issued in the Innovation Monday, a journal published in partnership with the Chinese Academy of Sciences. These sample may provide information about the early history of the solar system as well

The probe left earth on may 3rd and the journey lasted 53 days. The probe drilled into the core and scooped rocks from the surface. The probe landed in the inner Mongolia desert. Scientists all around the world are eagerly waiting for the samples to be analysed.
