The PNG Olympic Committee will celebrate the 2024 Olympic Day on Friday, June 21st, at the Taurama Aquatic Centre. This event will feature sports demonstrations with participants from the Port Moresby area. National Sport Federations have been invited to join through their Sport for Development programs.
To build engagement and excitement for Olympic Day, the PNG Olympic Committee has been running the Olympic Values program across the country throughout June, culminating in the event at the Taurama Aquatic Centre.
Olympic Day is more than just a sporting event; it’s a time to connect, encourage people to get active, learn about Olympic values, and explore new sports. Globally, National Olympic Committees (NOCs) involve athletes and Olympians in sharing experiences and sporting activities, create websites to promote local events, and organize concerts and exhibitions. Schools use NOCs’ educational resources to integrate Olympic Day into their curriculum, aligning Olympic values with school values and well-being. NOCs also host online events like quizzes and workouts to engage communities and promote fitness and positivity.
In PNG, the sports and programs featured on Olympic Day will include NRL-League Bilong Laif, PNGFA-Just Play, Hookin 4 Health, Netball-Hamamas lo Pilai, AFL-Pilai lo Senis, Inclusive Gymbad, Kicks 4 Kokoda, Cricket, Basketball, Karate, Fencing, and Weightlifting.
Federations have been asked to bring their implementing partners to set up stalls and distribute information. Partners include BSP, Femili PNG, Water Aid PNG, Tourism Promotion Authority, Cancer Foundation, and Kokoda Track Foundation, among others.
